Like the pronunciation of Worcestershire, many simply don’t understand what a “REALTOR®” is and how they are different than “real estate agents” or “real estate brokers.” So, what is the difference?

Simply put, the term “Real Estate Agent” is a blanket term used to describe the different types of professionals who buy and sell real estate. This term could cover agents, brokers, and REALTORS®. A real estate agent helps clients buy or sell homes but must work under a supervising broker; a broker has advanced licensing and can work independently, run their own firm, and hire or manage agents. Brokers typically oversee transactions and ensure legal compliance.

“Broker” and “agent” are both terms that point to their day-to-day duties and professional certifications. In contrast, the term “REALTOR®” is more focused on the ethical and personal implications of real estate sales.

To elaborate further, a REALTOR® is an agent or broker who belongs to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) – the largest trade association in the country. While many people know that REALTORS® help people buy and sell homes, what they may not know is that only REALTORS® commit to following a strict Code of Ethics intended to protect buyers and sellers. For example, REALTORS® pledge to protect and promote the interests of their clients.

For this reason, the REALTOR® designation is synonymous with both professionalism and trust. Prospective buyers and sellers often seek out REALTORS® specifically because of the assurance that comes with knowing that they are working with a professional who is dedicated to a rigorous code of ethics and is seeking their client’s best interest.

In this way, REALTORS® act as an advocate for their clients in ways that are unique to the industry. REALTORS® go beyond traditional real estate services and work tirelessly to protect and promote the best outcomes for each of their clients. This commitment to client advocacy is a difference that cannot be overstated.

Buying or selling a home is a big decision and those engaging in the purchase owe it to themselves to work with a professional – someone ethical, who knows the ins and outs of the market and the sales process.
